EPA assesses PFOA risks harsh times for Dupont

EPA released its draft risk assessment on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical used in the manufacture of Dupont’s Teflon polymer. According to the draft, cancer risks are relatively low but vary depending on the particular health effect. The company maintains that it did fulfill its obligations and that PFOA is harmless. Du Pont is ready to pay USD 343-million to settle charges that the company contaminated drinking water in West Virginia and Ohio with PFOA over the past 50 years. The settlement may be finalized after a public hearing in February.
