New Infusion Bagging Technology Offered Exclusively by Ashland
Oct 12, 2007
DUBLIN, Ohio -- Composites manufacturers using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) can now eliminate tacky tape and reduce leaks and tears with Sprayomer™ Elastomer vacuum bag technology exclusively available from Ashland Distribution, a division of Ashland Inc. The spray-on elastomer produces a reusable, custom-fit infusion molding bag that is light weight and extremely durable.
Sprayomer vacuum bags do not contain silicone or require embedded reinforcement. This unique property creates a bag that typically weighs one-third less than a silicone-based infusion bag. The lighter weight allows for easier handling by molders.
"This is exciting technology. The Sprayomer Elastomers are water-based and do not contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) above Material Safety Data Sheet reporting thresholds," said Don Belock, director of source management for Ashland Distribution. "The Sprayomer Elastomer produces a custom bag that can be used multiple times."
The Sprayomer technology is very robust and has been proven easy to adopt. The bag manufacturing process is less labor intensive than previous methods and will fully cure within 24 to 48 hours. It allows for repairs during the infusion process for a temporary hold, and permanent repairs can be made in less than an hour. The VARTM bags are compatible with most thermoset resin systems and can withstand working temperatures greater than 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
"This innovation is the beginning of a new wave of technology that will improve the infusion molding process for all markets currently using or considering the infusion process," added Belock. "In addition, this product brings benefits to companies looking to further their 'green' initiatives."
One VARTM bag is able to produce many parts with minimal or no repair, thus eliminating the considerable waste produced by other bagging films and systems. Companies have found this product can also help them comply with regulatory guidelines.
Sprayomer Elastomers are applied with the easy-to-use QuickMold™ Sprayer, which is EPA-ETV endorsed and facilitates very uniform application. The system is available exclusively through Ashland Distribution.
