Eastman Chemical Company Receives Cradle to CradleCM Certification for Polyesters

Eastman Chemical Company announced today that it has received Cradle to CradleCM (C2C) Silver certification from McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC (MBDC) for a number of Eastman polyesters. The certification includes polymers within several product families: Eastman Cadence™, Eastar™, Ecdel™, Eastman Embrace™, Eastman Lenstar™, MedStar™, Eastman Neostar™, ParaStar™, Eastman Provista™, Eastman Spectar™ and Eastman TiGlaze™. The certified polyesters are used in a variety of applications, including in the architecture, design, building and construction industries.
“In working closely with our customers, we recognized an opportunity to help differentiate their products in the marketplace by emphasizing the low environmental impact of our material solutions,” said Mark Costa, chief sustainability officer, Eastman Chemical Company. “Our recent MBDC certification, together with the GREENGUARD certification of select Eastman polyesters, provides our customers with a competitive advantage.”
The certification, awarded by leading environmental consulting firm MBDC, demonstrates that Eastman met specified criteria in a variety of categories measuring the sustainability and environmental impact of products. The C2C certification process analyzes products based on 30 criteria covering materials, material reutilization, energy, water and social responsibility.
MBDC utilizes a scientific process to evaluate the current human and environmental health and recyclability attributes of all materials going into products, as well as the impacts from their manufacture and use. Eastman’s materials were evaluated by MBDC through its C2C Design Protocol and were recognized for their low hazard and toxicity profiles. Additionally, through the C2C certification process, all of the Eastman polymers certified were considered 100 percent recyclable.
