LONDON - Demand growth for phenol in US is expected to be 2% a year trough 2011. High tempo growth is predicted for the use of phenol in polyphenylene oxide engineering resins, via orthoxylenol, though it is a very small market for phenol.
During 2010, European phenol utilization rates will stay at a low level until derivative demand significantly improves and becomes sustainable. Phenol market situation will be similar to the 2nd half of 2009 with 75% capacity.
Producers will shorten phenol production in Europe in case demand fails to improve significantly, particularly for bisphenol A (BPA). BPA accounts for approximately 45% of phenol demand and is driven by growth in polycarbonate resins. Phenolic resins are 2nd largest outlet for phenol, followed by caprolactam, alkyl phenols, aniline, adipic acid.
Phenol is used in phenolic resins production, nylon and other synthetic fibers manufacture. It is also used in slimicides, as a disinfectant and antiseptic, and in medicinal preparations, e.g. mouthwash, sore throat lozenges.
