Styrene Butadiene Rubber Industry Market Research (China)

Up to the end of 2006, there were seven styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) manufacturers in China, with a total capacity of 597,000 tons/year, which took 12.60% of the global total. SBR output at home arrived at 572,000 tons in 2006, up by 14.2% year-on-year.

The development of domestic downstream industries such as tyre and shoemaking boosted the demands for SBR. Since the output at home was quite limited, the import volume of SBR amounted to 188,400 tons, increasing 17.82 y-o-y. In contrast, the export volume stood at 25,000 tons, taking 4.37% of domestic total output.

China SBR industry develops very rapidly in recent years. Increases can be seen in many rubber varieties. Output of bicycle tyre, rubber overshoes and regenerated rubber each got the world first, which promoted the demand for SBR in China. The apparent consumption in 2006 hit 572,000 tons. Basically there were two phases in China SBR industry in 2006. In the first half the demand increased dramatically, and in the second half, it dropped slowly. 2007 saw a sign of re-rise in this industry.

It is forecasted that domestic demand for SBR will reach 800,000 to 850,000 tons in 2010, in which the demand for emulsion polymerized butadiene styrene rubber ( ESBR) is about 700,000 to 730,000 tons, and for solution polymerized butadiene styrene rubber(SSBR) 100,000 to 120,000 tons. ESBR will still be the main product in SBR consumption.
