Russia is amid world largest vanadium manufacturers. Its mine output of vanadium content reached 15,000 tonnes in 2011.
The amount demonstrated no upward or downward shifts from a year earlier. Nevertheless, it was 500 tonnes higher than in 2009.
However, the Russian demand for vanadium showed an insignificant rise if compared to 2010. Users based in the country consumed 9,000 tonnes in 2011, up by 0.5% year on year.
Production and consumption trends of vanadium in Russia, 2006-2011, metric tons of vanadium content
Being a prominent vanadium producer, Russia actively participates in the export market activity. Domestic companies exported 7,500 tonnes of vanadium oxides and hydroxides in 2010, a twofold increase from 2009.
Russia’s ferro-vanadium exports almost totaled 300 tonnes in 2010, a drop by 800 tonnes from the preceding year.
The Czech Republic and the Netherlands were the key importers of Russia’s vanadium oxides and hydroxides in 2009-2010, while ferro-vanadium exports were mainly forwarded to the Netherlands and Ukraine during the same period.
Overseas companies offer their vanadium to Russian consumers despite high local capacity. Some offers are attractive enough to draw purchasers’ attention.
Russia-based buyers obtained from foreign traders 1,500 tonnes of vanadium oxides and hydroxides in 2010, up by 540 tonnes year on year. Ferro-vanadium imports were only 80 tonnes in the same year. Most cargoes came from South Africa.
Russia remains the third in the list of global vanadium majors. China and South Africa occupy the first and the second position in the rating, respectively.
Structure of global vanadium production, by country, 2011
World vanadium manufacturers produced around 61,000 tonnes in 2011, a boost by 2,300 tonnes from the previous year.
The figure is expected to reach 63,000 tonnes in 2012 and register annual increases by around 3% by 2017.
Vanadium operations will be highly influenced by steel market trends.
