Boron Minerals Market: Strategic Supply and Advanced Applications Drive Change

The global boron minerals market is becoming increasingly strategic, supported by established demand from glass, ceramics, and fertilizers alongside expanding use in advanced materials, clean-energy technologies, and specialty chemicals. Although global boron resources are considered sufficient for long-term consumption, economically attractive deposits are concentrated in relatively few locations, making production geography an important factor in the market.

Turkey and the United States remain the two most important supply centres. Turkey possesses exceptionally large borate reserves, while the Mojave Desert in California hosts one of the world’s most significant commercial boron deposits.

Turkey Maintains Its Dominant Position in Borates

Turkey continues to hold a commanding position in refined boron products. Eti Maden had approximately 2.75 million tonnes per year of refined boron production capacity and produced around 2.35 million tonnes in 2024, 22% more than in 2023. Its share of the global refined borates market reached approximately 61%.

Exports are fundamental to the Turkish industry. About 96% of Eti Maden’s sales were exported, with Asian countries accounting for the majority of shipments.

Turkey is also moving further downstream. Development activities have included ferroboron production, sodium borohydride technology, and recovery of lithium from waste generated during boron processing. Such projects illustrate a broader industry shift from supplying conventional borates toward extracting greater value from integrated mineral-processing chains.

U.S. Borates Remain Critical to Global Supply

California is the other major pillar of global boron supply. Rio Tinto’s Boron operation produces approximately one million tonnes of refined borates annually, equivalent to roughly 30% of global demand, according to the company.

Recent market conditions have nevertheless been uneven. Rio Tinto reported borates production of 128,000 tonnes of B₂O₃ content during the third quarter of 2025, up 2% year on year. The company also noted a recovery in Chinese demand following tariff-related disruption earlier in the year.

Glass, Agriculture and Energy Technologies Support Boron Demand

Glass remains one of the most important boron-consuming industries. Borates improve thermal resistance, chemical durability and mechanical performance in borosilicate glass, fiberglass insulation and specialty glass products.

Agriculture provides another important outlet because boron is an essential micronutrient for plant development. Increasing attention to micronutrient management and crop productivity supports demand for boron-containing fertilizers.

Higher-value applications are also gaining importance. Boron compounds are used in permanent magnets, nuclear applications, advanced ceramics, flame retardants, specialty alloys and energy-storage technologies. These applications increase the strategic significance of high-purity boron derivatives even where their volumes remain considerably smaller than traditional glass markets.

New European Boron Projects Gain Strategic Attention

Supply diversification is becoming particularly important in Europe. In 2025, further exploration confirmed boron mineralisation in Serbia’s Jarandol Basin, while development work continued around the Piskanja boron deposit. The European Commission also designated the Jadar lithium-boron project as a strategic project under the Critical Raw Materials Act, highlighting the importance of developing domestic sources of critical raw materials.

Boron Minerals Market Outlook

The boron minerals market outlook remains positive, supported by construction-related glass demand, agriculture, and expanding high-performance applications. Turkey and the United States will remain central to global supply, but new projects and downstream processing investments could gradually diversify the industry.

Future competitiveness will increasingly depend on ore quality, processing efficiency, product purity, and the ability to supply specialized boron compounds for advanced technologies, rather than on mineral production volumes alone.
