The bentonite market has entered 2026 with relatively firm fundamentals, supported by demand from absorbents, drilling fluids, construction, foundries, iron ore pelletizing, and environmental applications. Unlike many industrial minerals that depend heavily on a single downstream sector, bentonite benefits from a diversified application base. At the same time, differences between sodium and calcium bentonite grades, deposit quality, and processing requirements continue to create distinct regional market conditions.
According to the latest U.S. Geological Survey data, global bentonite mine production was estimated at around 20 million metric tons in 2025, up from approximately 19.4 million tons in 2024. This indicates moderate expansion rather than a dramatic supply surge, keeping high-quality material strategically important for applications requiring strong swelling, binding, or rheological properties.
U.S. Bentonite Production Returns to Growth
The United States remains one of the world’s major producers of sodium bentonite. U.S. production increased from approximately 3.99 million metric tons in 2024 to an estimated 4.1 million tons in 2025, a rise of nearly 3%.
The end-use structure is particularly revealing. In 2025, pet waste absorbents accounted for around 48% of U.S. bentonite consumption, making this the country’s largest application. Drilling mud represented another 22%. These figures demonstrate how the market has evolved beyond its traditional association with oil and gas drilling.
Bentonite exports from the United States were estimated at 640,000 tons in 2025, down from around 700,000 tons in 2024. Canada, Japan, and Mexico remained the principal export destinations.
Absorbents Become an Increasingly Important Demand Driver
Consumer applications are now an important component of bentonite demand. Sodium bentonite’s ability to absorb liquid, swell, and form cohesive clumps makes it particularly suited to premium cat litter formulations. This segment is expanding alongside rising pet ownership, greater spending on pet-care products and the transition toward higher-performance clumping litter. At the same time, producers face competition from silica, organic litter, zeolites and other absorbent materials.
Drilling, Construction and Environmental Uses Remain Critical
Oil and gas drilling remains a major industrial outlet because bentonite provides viscosity, filtration control and borehole stability in water-based drilling fluids. However, drilling demand can fluctuate considerably with energy prices and exploration activity.
Construction and environmental applications are comparatively strong growth areas. Bentonite is widely used in diaphragm walls, tunnelling, horizontal directional drilling, waterproofing systems and geosynthetic clay liners. Its extremely low hydraulic conductivity also makes sodium bentonite valuable for landfill liners, containment barriers and groundwater protection.
Foundry binders and iron ore pelletizing provide additional industrial demand, particularly in regions with large steelmaking and mineral-processing industries.
Bentonite Market Outlook
The near-term bentonite market outlook remains positive but application-dependent. Global production is growing moderately, while demand is increasingly distributed across consumer absorbents, infrastructure, environmental engineering and traditional heavy industries. Future competitiveness will depend less on simply supplying raw clay and more on delivering consistent swelling capacity, rheology, adsorption performance and application-specific processing. Premium sodium bentonite grades, activated bentonites and engineered products for environmental containment are therefore likely to capture an increasing share of market value as the industry moves toward more specialized, performance-driven applications.
