Sodium Cyanide Market: Gold Mining Demand Tightens the Global Supply Balance

The sodium cyanide market is entering a stronger demand cycle, supported primarily by elevated gold prices, higher mine activity, declining ore grades, and continued investment in gold-processing capacity. While sodium cyanide has applications in chemical synthesis and metal treatment, gold extraction remains by far its most important commercial outlet, making developments in the precious-metals sector a key indicator of market direction.

Strong Gold Market Fundamentals Support Sodium Cyanide Demand

Gold mining conditions strengthened considerably during 2025. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, worldwide gold mine production reached an estimated 3,300 metric tons in 2025, compared with around 3,280 tons in 2024. The estimated annual gold price was also 38% higher than in 2024.

These economics are important for sodium cyanide suppliers. Higher gold prices allow miners to process deposits and lower-grade ores that may previously have been marginal, increasing the amount of ore passing through cyanidation circuits.

Draslovka estimated global sodium cyanide demand at approximately 1.3 million tonnes in 2025, including liquid material. The company sold 128.6 thousand tonnes during the year, its highest sodium cyanide volume in six years. More importantly, it reported that the market entered 2026 with demand exceeding available supply, a situation that could extend beyond the year.

Producers Strengthen Sodium Cyanide Supply Networks

Supply security has consequently become an increasingly important competitive factor.

Orica has substantially enlarged its sodium cyanide platform following the integration of Cyanco, creating a manufacturing network spanning Australia and the United States. Its facilities include Yarwun in Queensland and production assets in Nevada and Texas.

During the first half of 2026, Orica continued to report strong sodium cyanide demand from the gold sector. The company also completed upgrades at its Winnemucca solids plant, allowing further optimisation across its Winnemucca, Yarwun and Alvin production network.

Long-term contracting is also gaining importance. Draslovka reported that about 70% of its 2025 sodium cyanide volumes were sold under long-term contracts, while its new agreement with Nevada Gold Mines is expected to lift contracted volumes from its U.S. operations to above 95% in coming years.

Safety and Logistics Become Central Market Differentiators

Sodium cyanide is hazardous and requires tightly controlled manufacturing, packaging, transportation, storage, and handling. As a result, the market cannot be evaluated simply on production cost or nominal capacity. The International Cyanide Management Code now has more than 250 participating companies, covering miners, producers and transport operators. Certification activity continued through 2025 and 2026, highlighting the growing importance of independently verified cyanide management across increasingly complex international supply chains.

Sodium Cyanide Market Outlook

The near-term outlook remains closely linked to gold mining economics. Strong gold prices, expanding mine development and greater processing of lower-grade resources should maintain healthy demand for sodium cyanide. At the same time, limited qualified production capacity, stringent logistics requirements and increasing preference for secure long-term supply contracts could keep the market relatively tight.

Alternative and cyanide-reduction technologies are advancing, particularly as miners seek lower environmental footprints. However, established cyanidation infrastructure, high recovery efficiency and decades of operating experience mean sodium cyanide is likely to remain a critical gold-processing reagent for the foreseeable future. The industry’s next phase will therefore be shaped not simply by higher volumes, but by reliable supply, safer logistics, efficient reagent use and increasingly rigorous environmental management.
